Who Made Trend Grandfather Clocks?

The Trend Clock Company was founded in 1937 by Gerritt Van Tamelen, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for clockmaking and craftsmanship. The company utilised electric motions by the Hammond clock company at Chicago, IL between 1937 and 1941. Trend clocks manufactured during 1936 – 1984 usually feature "Trend" marking on the dial.

The Story Behind Trend Clock Company

From 1937 to 1984, clocks made by Trend were typically marked with “Trend” on the dial, helping to establish the company’s identity. In 1941, Trend transitioned to using self-starting electric movements from the Sessions Clock Company in Connecticut. Unfortunately, World War II interrupted production, but Trend quickly adapted by using Hansen electric movements after the war.

In 1949, Trend introduced its first grandmother clock, a smaller and more compact version of the traditional grandfather clock. This new product line was a success and led to the introduction of hall clocks, which were designed to fit smaller spaces while still maintaining the elegance of a full-size clock. As Trend expanded its offerings, it found a need for a reliable supplier of mechanical movements, which led to a partnership with the German company Schatz in 1951. Schatz became the primary supplier of mechanical movements for Trend clocks during the 1950s, working alongside Hansen as the company’s main suppliers during this period.

The 1950s also saw the introduction of a French Provincial style of clocks, which became a popular addition to Trend’s diverse range of designs. The company’s clocks were now available in a variety of styles, from traditional to more contemporary looks, giving homeowners plenty of options for their décor.

In 1968, Trend was sold to the Sligh Furniture Company, marking a new chapter in the brand’s history. From 1969 to 1984, Sligh continued to use the Trend name on its clocks, and these timepieces were often marked with “Trend Clocks by Sligh.” After 1984, however, clocks were made exclusively under the Sligh name, and the production of clocks under the Trend brand ceased. Sligh continued to make clocks until 2005, when the company stopped clockmaking completely, marking the end of an era for Trend Clocks.
